We have just come to the end of making awards to current third-year BA Design students at Goldsmiths to help them in their final project work.

The Tom Fund awarded a total of £3,333 to 13 students in 2018, compared to £2,600 to 10 students in 2017.  We set neither guidelines on the total spend or number of students to whom we will make awards.

We have established a website for the fund to make it easier for students to apply and for you to follow the progress of different projects and students. The website is at https://www.tomfund.org and will shortly be updated with information about those projects which received funding.

The third-year students are hosting their degree show at a new venue this year: Unit 8, Copeland Road, Peckham, London SE15 3SN. There are further details on their website at https://m-o-d.co.uk, including a link to a map. Mark, James, Emma and Anne will all be there and look forward to seeing as many of you as can make it.

With many thanks for your support- it is hugely appreciated by the students, the department and by us.

The Tom Fund is going from strength to strength and we are looking forward to seeing what applications 2018 brings.

The administrative group, consisting of Goldsmiths' Design tutors, Tom's Goldsmiths' friends and his family, met in October to reflect on the processes and outcomes of the fund.

One addition to the administrative group is Dean Pankhurst. Dean was a close friend, and colleague, of Tom. They worked together on many projects whilst at Goldsmiths. Dean is now a designer at the innovative company Mayku; have a look at https://www.mayku.me

We agreed that now we had a year of experience it was a lot easier to both brief students and, also, tutors on how the fund works and, in particular, what makes a good application. We have provided tutors with more background information and reasons why some applications failed. This should help them to help their students apply with greater success.

We have also set up this website. The intention is that this will make applications easier for current students and also provide an online record of successful applications. This should also be a useful link for awardees applying for positions post university.

The feedback from students and tutors has been overwhelmingly positive and we look forward to continuing to provide financial support to Third Year Design Students.

Thank you all for your support, and best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a happy 2018.

With thanks,

Anne, Mark, James and Emma
